How I climbed the ruined Hričov castle

There are at least seven castles and three manors that I know of around Žilina and my goal is to visit them all.

This is one of them.

It doesn’t take long to arrive at the trailhead by bus and the whole trip is rather short, so one considerably chilly but clear autumn afternoon I set out; late even by my standards.

I was surprised by the trail. Although it’s not long by any measure, the steep grade makes you exert much more effort. However, the descent was quick, sped up by the imminent nightfall.

Overall, this seldom-visited ruin is iteresting mainly for its paradoxical calm. Although it cannot be considered remote at all, few tourists venture here as this is not the kind of stereotypical attractive medieval castle ruin, with barely the donjon preserved.
